Long hours. Days, weeks, months of playtime. Big boss battles. Dying. Trying again. Failing. Trying again — beating the game.
Now that Elden Ring has finally been released, we thought now might be a better time than ever to talk gaming chairs. Specifically, durable ones.
The average gamer logs a lot of hours in their seats, ourselves included.
And, if you’ve ever looked around the market for chairs specifically made for gaming, you’ve probably been surprised by the sheer number of options available.
There are budget gaming chairs, expensive gaming chairs, PC gaming chairs, console gaming chairs, mesh gaming chairs, tall gaming chairs.
But (as is often the case), companies have taken hold of the craze, with mixed results.
That’s why we’re here — to separate the worthy from the unworthy.
We want to answer the question ‘are gaming chairs really worth it?’. Do they actually make gaming better, more comfortable, and offer tangible performance benefits?
We’ve taken a deep dive into gaming chair design and construction to answer these questions and more.
Read on for a comprehensive gaming chair product guide, and our picks for the six most durable gaming chairs on the market in 2022.
Are gaming chairs worth it?
These days, It seems all too easy for a brand to slap the word ‘gaming’ in front of a product and triple the price without putting any thought into design, use-cases, and function.
The market is overrun with chairs that may have flashy coloring, ergonomic design, and maybe even RGB lighting, but start showing signs of wear only a few weeks or months in.
Material breakage, structural failures, and discoloration are just some of the signs of poor gaming chair design.
Another one is just that the chair has simply stopped being comfortable after a certain amount of playtime.
At a certain point, you have to ask the question — is it really necessary to buy a chair specifically made for gaming? What gaming brands actually offer real value for gamers in their chair design and functionality? Are there normal office chairs out there that do a better or equal job at a more reasonable price?
We’ve done the research so you don’t have to.
First, let’s take a look at the things to consider when buying a gaming chair.
How to choose a gaming chair
We know you want to jump into our product section and buy your new gaming throne. But stop, take a breath, and focus for a second (just as when you’re trying that long-distance headshot with the Kraber). After all, you’re looking for a long-term investment (mostly in your health).
We’ll walk you through the key elements and features of gaming chairs today, and highlight the non-negotiables when making your product selection.
Types of gaming chairs
First, let’s take a look at the main categories of gaming chairs. Generally speaking, there are two master categories worth considering for most types of gamers.
1. PC gaming chairs
These are chairs specifically designed for gaming on a desktop computer. They are upright with a straight back to accommodate keyboard and mouse usage.
Their features typically include a headrest, armrests, a wheeled base, and swivel functionality so you can also sit comfortably even in front of your laptop.
2. Console gaming chairs
These are chairs specifically designed for gaming on consoles. They are more reclined and/or reclinable than PC gaming chairs to match the TV viewing angle and handheld controller usage.
They are usually static and include headrests, sometimes armrests, with rocking functionality. They can also include technological integrations such as speakers, headset ports, and USB charging ports.
Key gaming chair considerations
When researching whether a certain gaming chair is right for you, think about the following 3-key considerations.
1. Dimensions and weight capacity
Naturally, the best gaming chair for you will be the one that matches your specific body type. With your height and weight in mind, check the dimensions and weight capacity of the chair to see if it’s a good fit.
Ergonomics is an applied science in product design that considers the functionality and comfort of a product based on the shape and needs of its user.
In gaming chairs, that means chairs that are adjustable, form-fitting, and comfortable. Look out for features like lumbar (lower back) support, 4-dimensional adjustable armrests, breathable fabrics…
3. Technological integrations
Some gaming chair models feature electronic integrations that can work with your gaming machine to offer enhanced features. If this is the case, check the compatibility of the chair with your gaming machine to make sure they can work together.
Finally, as you know by now if you’re a regular RUGGED RATINGS reader, we consider the durability and ‘buy-it-for-life’ factor as one of the most important for any purchase decision.
If a product isn’t built to last, we aren’t interested. We want you to feel confident that a large purchase like a gaming chair is going to pay you back with years, possibly even a lifetime of good usage.
So, we’ve developed a scoring system that determines the extent to which a product can be considered ‘buy-it-for-life’.
In the realm of durable gaming chairs, that means…
- Rugged: 50% weight of total score – strong, durable structural and upholstery materials and good build quality, preferably with a durability certification.
- Repairable: 20% weight of total score – long warranty periods, customer support, replaceable parts and components available to purchase
- Upgradable: 15% weight of total score – additional features and upgrades available such as swappable cushions, accessories, and a high degree of customizability.
- Multipurpose: 15% weight of total score – chairs that are equally suitable for work and productivity-related tasks as well as gaming, are customizable to accommodate different body shapes, and can be used for PC and console gaming.

Respawn 110 Pro — Best budget durable gaming chair
You don’t have to spend a thousand bucks to get a fit-for-purpose gaming chair that will last.
And that’s exactly the niche that dedicated gaming chair company Respawn hopes to fill, with their Respawn 110 Pro — an update to the Respawn 110 that packs a lot of functionality into a gaming-first design, with a few nifty additional features.
Respawn may claim that the 110 Pro is fit for both work and play, and while that’s probably true, make no mistake… this is a gaming chair from the ground-up.
It takes the form of a traditional, upright PC gaming chair design with a thick base, winged back, and fitted headrest.
The 5-star base allows you to move and swivel at your leisure, and essentially every component of the chair is padded for enveloping comfort.
Uniquely, the chair has a built-in, extendable footrest that you can pull out. Combined with the reclining back to a maximum of 155°, you can lie in an almost fully horizontal position for an impromptu mid-session nap.
We’re not off to a great start with the non-metal base, which is a far cry from sturdier components you’ll find in the rest of the list. But keep in mind the budget — this thing sits comfortably under the $200 mark. And user reviews are largely positive, pointing to a decently durable design for the price point.
The two-layer plush foam top and dense foam base offer a solid, comfortable base. And, while the faux leather layer could be tougher, the premium double-stitch should give you peace of mind when it comes to tearing and breakage.
Speaking of which, the warranty is an extremely generous five years, earning its place on the list as a chair that may not be the most rugged on paper, but makes up for it with a reasonable price and good support.
PRICE: Around $190.
PERFECT FOR: Lower-budget, casual gamers who want a sturdy place to sit when they get a chance to play.
Cougar Argo — Best mesh gaming chair
Are you a ‘real’ gamer?
‘Real gear for real gamers’ is the tagline of gaming peripheral company Cougar, which considers gaming both an art and a sport.
The Argo is a slim, breathable mesh chair with a lot of design and little flash. Let’s take a closer look.
The first thing you’ll notice about the Argo is how little chair there is. Its skinny, almost translucent design strays from the bulk and over-engineering of many gaming chairs on the market, and that offers a number of benefits.
Namely, the breathability. Both the backrest and the seat are composed of a mesh fabric specifically designed to reduce heat and humidity build-up over longer sessions.
The height, tilt, and seat sliding depth are adjustable via a unique ‘trigger shift’ wire control system — and the headrest and armrests are also adjustable to a custom fit. It also features dynamic lumbar support for a comfortable sit that won’t mess up your posture.
As for durability, the frame is composed of tough aluminum alloy for seriously sturdy sitting. Combined with the chair’s overall lightness, the chances of you breaking this thing are slim-to-none, even for heavier users up to 330lbs.
While mesh makes up the majority of the upholstery, the headrest is made of breathable PVC leather. Overall, this chair can be considered durable by design, offering little room for breakage.
They offer a two-year warranty for the frame and base, which is a little low if you ask us.
PRICE: Around $500.
PERFECT FOR: Gamers in warmer climates who may be a little more prone to sweating.
Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 — Best durable gaming chair
Gorgeous aesthetics, the finest materials. That’s the vision the Secretlab founders had when creating their gaming chair company in 2014.
And the Titan Evo 2022 is a testament to that idea, marrying beauty with durability without charging the Earth. Let’s check it out.
The first thing to say about the Titan Evo 2022 is that it’s whatever you want it to be. Right off the bat, the customization options are broad — offering three sizes, three different upholstery options, and too-many-to-count colorways, and a host of accessories.
The second is, how many gaming chairs do you know that have an NFC tag to determine counterfeits? Not many, I bet.
But there’s a lot to protect with the Titan Evo’s design. It’s truly unique in a number of ways.
First, is the pebble seat design, which flares at the edges to cradle you in place. And not only does the chair come in three sizes, but each one is also incredibly adjustable — with 4D adjustability for both the armrests and lumbar support.
Among its other exclusive, patent-pending features include a magnetic, memory-foam head pillow and ‘cold-cure’ foam mix.
It’s also composed of some seriously premium and robust materials.
The frame is steel, and the wheelbase is a tough ADC12 aluminum for unmatched stability and durability. The cold-cure foam also supposedly holds its shape longer than traditional foam.
As for the upholstery, as we mentioned, you can take your pick from a hybrid leatherette, SoftWeave fabric, or NAPA leather, with the latter being the most durable.
Backing their rugged claims, Secretlab offers a really respectable five-year warranty.
PRICE: In range of $500 — $1000.
PERFECT FOR: Serious gamers who don’t want to compromise on any element of their gaming throne.
AndaSeat Phantom 3 — Best gaming chair for comfort
‘The best chair at a fair price’ might not be the official tagline for eSports-focused seating company AndaSeat, but it makes a lot of sense when you look at the Phantom 3.
In a lot of ways, the AndaSeat Phantom 3 takes the idea of the Secretlab Titan Evo, and puts it all into a more affordable package.
Let’s see why.
AndaSeat put a lot of stock in the ‘comfort’ dimension of the sitting experience, with the Phantom 3 offering a safe and reliable ergonomic design that doesn’t attempt to push any boundaries.
The chair is flared at the backrests and seat to ‘cup’ you in place, with a curvature that follows your spine thanks to the included lumbar pillow.
And you can take that comfort to the next level with a list-topping 160° recline angle.
The frame is 100% steel which is good news for longevity. As for the padding, they offer a highly dense 60kg/m³ foam that balances sitting comfort with long-lasting strength that shouldn’t sag even after years of use.
You can take your pick of upholstery options between the standard PVC leather, durable but not all-too breathable, or the linen fabric, breathable but not so tough.
They offer a two-year warranty with each purchase, which is about right given the materials and very reasonable price-point.
PRICE: Around $350.
PERFECT FOR: Gamers/work-from-homers prioritizing comfort above all else.
Neo Chair Edge — Best hybrid work/gaming chair
At the start of the article, we posed a question — is it really worth it to buy a specialized gaming chair?
Given the Neo Chair Edge’s inclusion on the list, we’d say the answer is: not always.
Let’s take a look at the reasons why.
The Neo Chair Edge wouldn’t look out of place in a dentist’s office. It’s strikingly minimal, contemporary, and luxurious looking. And that’s probably because it’s not really a ‘gaming’ chair, though it could certainly function as one.
It’s extremely pillow-ey, with a waffle-style design where the cushioning is contoured inwards for extra comfort and support —even if structurally the chair doesn’t look all that ergonomic.
You can enjoy a 130° tilt with it, too, and adjustable height. Those are the only two things on the menu in terms of adjustment, though, with the armrests fixed in place. That didn’t stop one happy customer claiming that the Edge was “The most comfortable office chair ever! It feels like I’m sitting on clouds!”.
Working, gaming, your body knows only one language: comfort. And the Edge ticks that box.
And it’s tough, too, with a strong steel frame, metal base, and class-A nylon wheels that can handle both hardwood and carpet.
The wheels also have a universal stem, which we love, as it means they can be easily replaced in the case of breakage or if you want to upgrade to one more suited to your flooring situation.
The chair itself utilizes breathable PU leather, which is resilient to breakage, doesn’t accumulate moisture and is easy to clean.
PRICE: Around $165.
PERFECT FOR: Minimalist, casual gamers/work-from-homers.
Herman Miller x Logitech G Embody Gaming Chair — Best luxury gaming chair
We saved this premium pick for last.
Those familiar with Herman Miller will know exactly what we’re dealing with here — luxury, defined.
Legendary office and home furniture designers (of the Eames chair fame) have teamed up with Logitech to embellish their Embody chair with features perfectly suited to a premium gaming experience (…if you can afford it).
The original ‘Embody’ chair is a purpose-built office chair that has been described as “The benchmark for pressure distribution, natural alignment, and support”.
This one promises the same, offering a design that mimics the standing position while seated by supporting the sacrum, naturally adjusting to the shape of your spine, and offers pressure distribution that moves with you.
With the help of Logitech, they’ve taken that idea to the next level with a chair that promises everything that the Embody does, with a few additional features to make gaming that much more enjoyable.
Most notably, the seat, which enjoys an additional foam layer that accommodates the more upright, alert posture that gaming necessitates. More so, it’s copper-fused to prevent heat buildup as you grind for hours on end.
It’s also highly adjustable, offering 2D arm adjustment, BackFit (lumbar) adjustment, and seat depth/height adjustment.
Given the legendary design lineage of Herman Miller, you can expect nothing less than the highest levels of durability. They claim that this could be the last gaming chair you ever have to buy, and with good reason.
It features a die-cast aluminum frame, four-layer seat foam, and 100% polyester fabric that’s been tested for abrasion durability, seam strength, ultraviolet light resistance, color retention (crocking resistance), and flame resistance.
The armrest support is a self-skinning thermo-plastic urethane foam molded around a glass-filled nylon insert.
If all that sounds like mumbo-jumbo, you need to look no further than this when assessing the chair’s durability: they offer a 12-year warranty with each purchase!
PRICE: Over $1700.
PERFECT FOR: Money-no-object gamers with an eye for premium design and no tolerance for anything less than the best.
We know what you’re thinking — and you’re right. It would be easy to pick the Herman Miller x Logitech G Embody chair as our #1 recommendation. It’s got the best materials, the most design considerations, and of course the highest BIFL score. In reality, it probably is the most durable chair on the list, if durability = strength and longevity.
But, we like to take everything into account when making our recommendations. Including price, and value. And, overall, it seems to us that the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 simply offers more bang for your buck than the Embody, and that’s why it’s our #1 pick.
At around half the price of the Herman Miller chair, you get the same aluminum metal frame, potentially more durable upholstery (at a cheaper price), and a greater degree of adjustability, too. On top of that, it gives the Embody a run for its money in the looks department and offers five years of peace of mind with the warranty. If durability also = value as well as strength, then the Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 comes first, and the Embody comes second.
And, for our budget-restricted gamers out there — don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Look no further than the Respawn 110 Pro. It’s not all that fancy and likely won’t last a lifetime. However, it’s comfortable, adjustable, and reasonably strong (for the price). For under 200 bucks, you can’t go wrong with this one.
