At a glance…

In our opinion, the most durable Android phone in 2022 is the Kyocera DuraForce Ultra. It achieved the highest BIFL score on the list at 90%, winning points for ruggedness, multipurposeness, and importantly, repairability.

At number two is the AGM Glory PRO. It’s $100 cheaper than the Kyocera, and actually has more claim to the ‘most durable Android phone’ throne, thanks to its MIL-STD-810H certification.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, be sure to check out the Cubot KingKong 5 Pro. It might be the lowest-scoring phone on the list in terms of its BIFL qualities, but you get a surprisingly high level of ruggedness for around $220.

Last Updated on Oct-10-2022 – This article is an update for 2022 to our January 2021 most durable Android phone list. Since then, there have been multiple releases of new rugged Android phones that have surpassed the standard set by the models in our prior article. Accordingly, we’ve included the latest and greatest durable Android phones to reflect these changes, keeping the entries that still hold up to our rugged scrutiny.

Paranoid Android

As the annual cycle of new phone releases marches forward seemingly with no end in sight, it appears as if a select few consumers are finally beginning to acknowledge the futility – and are beginning to put their money where their mouth is.

Especially now in a time of such economic calamity, people are rightly wondering whether it’s really worth it to spend $800+ to upgrade their smartphone each year for marginally updated hardware, and a few exclusive but minimally impactful software features.

It also seems to us that, whilst it is possible for a phone to make significant jumps in certain areas such as processing power or storage capacity in their latest iterations, not much attention is paid to the design fundamentals as they relate to strength and durability.

In fact, with their larger screens and additional cameras, despite the fact that new materials come into play (i.e new version of Gorilla Glass display [1] ) you could make an argument to say that as each year passes, new smartphones are actually becoming more delicate and prone to breakdown.

Rugged Smartphone Revolution

The ‘rugged smartphone’ market is beginning to pick up steam, with more options available today than ever.

Whether you are a construction worker in need of a phone that can withstand being accidentally thrown in a cement mixer, a military officer needing a bulk order of rugged phones that can comfortably survive a combat zone, or simply a person who’s experienced one too many smashed screens – there are plenty of options out there for you.

You can now get phones that are waterproof, dirtproof, dustproof, and drop-proof, or all of the above, with varying degrees of toughness all the way up to military specification.

In this article, we will be reviewing the results of our research in order to find the most durable android phones on the market #BIFL.

We’ll only consider a durable phone that meets a minimum standard of smarts, matching or coming close to the ‘core’ specs of leading smartphones (processing power, camera megapixels, etc.), as well as offering equal user-friendliness in the software design, user-experience, and features.

Given that, our selections must then possess verifiable standards of protection in one or more relevant areas so that they could fulfill the needs of the average smartphone user for many years to come.

We’ll also be focusing only on Android OS phones due to the openness and flexibility of their software, which allows for a degree of personalization and modernization that may serve to extend the phone’s longevity.

As always on Rugged Ratings, we will utilize our #BIFL system as the key comparison metric between our finds. In the area of indestructible smartphones, that means we are looking for phones that are…

#BIFL

Rugged: 50% weight from the total score – Phones that have standards of protection from one or more environmental hazards.

Repairable: 20% weight from the total score – Phones with extended or lifetime warranties and advanced support services for part replacements.

Upgradable: 15% weight from the total score – Phones with upgradable individual parts such as removable batteries or cameras.

Multipurpose: 15% weight from the total score – Phones that serve needs beyond those of typical smartphones such as advanced data encryption or thermal cameras.

We will conclude with a table featuring all the specs of each of our picks so that you can get a quick-look comparison in order to make the most informed decision. Let’s begin.

The AGM Glory PRO is a 5G-enabled, Android-based rugged smartphone released in 2021.

With its high-end internal spec, it’s clear that AGM are targeting the consumer who wants their phone to be maximally resistant to common industrial or commercial hazards, without losing the ‘smart’ part of their smartphones.

It runs off a Qualcomm 480 5G chipset, which represents the highest-performing connectivity in an AGM phone to date.

Among its unique features include a long-lasting battery life that can withstand freezing conditions, a thermal imaging camera, wireless charging, a laser range finder, 3.5W huge outdoor speaker, a multi-factor GPS system, and many more rugged features.

As for its ruggedization, the AGM Glory PRO goes a long way:

#DURABLE
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • IP69K rated hermetic seal
  • MIL-STD-810H military certification
  • 22hrs of operation in -27°C
  • ‘Bite pattern’ design and 0.3mm shallow screen

We’re fans of the upgradability of this device, which includes a hybrid SIM/SD slot for either x1 nano-SIM and x1 micro-SD card, or x2 nano-SIM cards.

This tough phone supports up to 512GB of additional storage if the internal 256GB isn’t sufficient for your needs. And cord-cutters will be pleased with the 10W wireless charging capabilities of the PRO, available with a separately sold compatible accessory.

Be sure to check out our full review [article publish in progress] for a detailed specification and our overall thoughts for the AGM Glory PRO.

Pros
  • Highest level of military-grade protection in a modern-day smartphone, with MIL-STD-810H, IP68, and IP69K certification
  • Industrial tools including a thermal camera and laser range finder
  • Great battery performance in freezing temperatures
Cons
  • Weak warranty length and terms
  • Form factor is bulky and leaves much to be desired visually

PRICE: Around $800.

PERFECT FOR: Those looking for a phone that’s capably ‘smart’, but truly excels in ruggedness.

Cubot (a combination of ‘cool’ and ‘robot’, if you were wondering) is a relatively new cellular and wearable tech company out of Shenzhen, China.

The KingKong 5 Pro, so named because of its strength and bulky form-factor we can assume, is an ultra-tough budget mobile phone running on the latest Android 11 OS.

It leaves a lot to be desired in the internal spec department, with an MT6762D Octa-Core processor, no 5G capability, and a relatively modest 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM. There’s room to expand the internal storage to up to 256GB with the micro-SD card slot, however.

What it does have, though, is one of the largest capacity batteries on the list at a very healthy 8000mAh.

Its other neat additions include Sony 48MP Triple AI main cameras, a 25MP front-facing camera, and dual loudspeakers.

But Cubot knows you’re probably not in it for the connectivity or pretty pictures. They put all their eggs in the durability basket, with the following features:

#DURABLE
  • IP68 rating for submersion at 1.5m for 30 minutes
  • IP69K rated seal
  • MIL-STD-810G military certification
  • Raised cornering for1.5m drop resistance

That’s on par or just slightly below the other phones on the list in terms of durability specs, but at an attractive sub $300 price point.

And considering it features a number of contemporary convenience features of modern-day smartphones, including face-ID for unlocking and NFC capabilities for Google Pay, it represents a pretty good deal for someone prioritizing durability and affordability over smarts.

Pros
  • Large 8000mAh battery capacity
  • Attractive price for the level of rugged specification
  • A number of convenience features including NFC and face-ID
Cons
  • No 5G capability
  • Disappointing one-year warranty

PRICE: Around $220.

PERFECT FOR: Budget buyers who care more about toughness than internal spec.

Our previous most durable Android phone list included the Blackview BV9800 Pro, a seriously tough cell phone marketed as ‘the best thermal phone available’, thanks to its FLIR thermal imaging camera and temperature resistance range of -30°C to +50°C.

A thermal camera is undeniably neat, but only truly useful to a niche audience for industrial work. Accordingly, this time we’re highlighting the BL6000 Pro, which takes a different approach by axing the thermal camera in place of a more well-rounded smartphone camera system and adding 5G capability for better connectivity.

Thankfully, they haven’t shied away from the durability element though, with the following rugged features:

#DURABLE
  • Military rated MIL-STD-810G specification for shock-resistance
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • IP69K rating for high-temperature water jet resistance
  • Thermal-resistance between -30°C and +50°C

The BL6000 Pro takes waterproofing perhaps more seriously than any other, thanks to its sealed membrane and nano-molding to achieve the IP69K high-pressure water jet resistance certification.

Considering its ability to function at -22 Fahrenheit (-30°C), this phone would be just as comfortable catching waves with you on a surfboard as it would be skiing down the Alps — a perfect choice for the outdoor recreation enthusiast.

As for connectivity and internals, the BL6000 Pro runs off a MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC that offers 5G with great power efficiency.

256 ROM and 8GB RAM will also be plenty for all contemporary smartphone responsibilities, and you’ll be able to get great shots and video with the 48MP camera that can shoot in 4k (locked at 30fps, though).

Pros
  • List-topping functional thermal range of -30°C and +50°C
  • Great camera system
  • Strong chipset
Cons
  • Disappointing one-year warranty

PRICE: Around $400 (-45% discount as of Dec/1/2021).

PERFECT FOR: Swimmers, skiers, surfers, and outdoor adventurers of all kinds.

Caterpillar Inc., starkly recognizable with its iconic yellow cranes and other construction-related machinery, have built plenty of things that could easily destroy the average smartphone.

So, it’s only fair that they restore the balance with a line of nearly indestructible phones that are construction-site ready, and that’s exactly what subsidiary brand CAT has done.

The CAT S62 Pro is the most heavily featured, and expensive, of their line-up. Self-titled as “The ultimate work phone”, the S62 has a number of rugged features:

#DURABLE
  • The latest military rated MIL-STD-810H specification for shock, vibration, sand, salt-mist, and pressure resistance
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6 damage-resistant screen
  • Non-slip rubberised TPU casing

MIL-STD-810H is the latest iteration of the military specification for enclosed devices, giving the phone protection from a broader range of stressors.

It also features the highest resolution FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal imaging camera, a relevant feature in a world where temperature checks can suggest the presence of a deadly virus.

Apart from the hardware integrations, CAT have included a number of construction-friendly features that make it easy to use in many situations, such as making the screen respond to wet or gloved fingers, and the fact that the phone is fully washable with soaps, sanitizers, chemicals, bleach, and alcohol.

As for core specs, the S62 Pro runs on Android 10, so if you’ve owned an Android phone before, the interface and user experience will be familiar to you.

It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Octa-core processor, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB ROM which is expandable via micro SD cards.

The camera is a slightly underwhelming 12MP, and the battery capacity levels out at an adequate 4000mAh.

Pros
  • Thoroughly cleanable
  • Gorilla glass screen resistant to scratches and cracks
  • Thermal camera
Cons
  • Disappointing main camera
  • No 5G capability
  • Relatively small battery capacity

PRICE: Around $600

PERFECT FOR: Perhaps the most construction-site ready smartphone on the planet.

A worthy rival to the CAT S62 Pro at a lower price point, Ulefone’s latest Armor 14 model balances wide-ranging functionality with respectable toughness:

#DURABLE
  • MIL-STD-810G certification
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • IP69K rating for high-temperature water jet resistance
  • Corning® Gorilla® Glass damage-resistant screen
  • Soft TPU cornering for drop-resistance

The headline selling point for the Armor 14, though, is the monstrous 10000mAh battery! That’s days of continuous usage without a recharge, and when that day does finally come, you have the option of 18W type-C charging or 15W wireless charging.

On its own, all of that’s impressive. But considering the boat-load of other unique and nifty features including 1TB expandable storage, dual fingerprint and face-ID security, headset-free FM radio, and custom key for programmable functions including push-to-talk with Zello, the phone seems like a true steal at only around $220.

It’s let down only by its disappointing 20MP main camera and lack of 5G capability.

Pros
  • Thoroughly cleanable
  • Gorilla glass screen resistant to scratches and cracks
  • Thermal camera
Cons
  • Disappointing main camera
  • No 5G capability

PRICE: Around $220.

PERFECT FOR: The rugged all-rounder — an affordable smartphone that’s suitable as a work or play device.

Japanese business-solutions-focused brand Kyocera makes one of our favorite flip phones – but for Android smartphones, they didn’t make it the last edition of the 2021 list.

However, for our 2022 top, they made a breakthrough with the latest DuraForce Ultra 5G model — an attractive (and expensive) prospect for industrial customers thanks to its range of special features and impressive post-sales care.

Running off the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G Octa-core chipset, the phone offers multi-gigabit speeds and great connectivity, especially considering the additional push-to-talk function that’s perfect for large, local teams.

The 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM are also sufficient, and indeed expandable up to 1TB via micro-SD.

It’s rough-stuff includes:

#DURABLE
  • MIL-STD-810H certification
  • IP65 rating for dust resistance
  • IP68 rating for water immersion
  • Hazardous locations certification: Class I Div 2, Group A, B, C, D; T4
  • Sapphire Shield damage-resistant screen

The 4500mAh battery is a little undersized for an industrial phone, but with wireless charging, fast cable-charging, and rear-side charging pins, you won’t be short of options when it goes flat.

Kyocera also promises a long battery lifespan thanks to its Battery Care Mode function.

You are granted a 2-year warranty as standard with each purchase, but their Business Select plan offers a really nice range of post-sales features that deserve a mention — 24hr device replacement, custom provisioning, custom repair, and lifecycle management will ensure that your corporate budget is well spent.

Pros
  • Great business support
  • Great chipset
  • Two-year warranty as standard
Cons
  • Relatively small battery capacity
  • Expensive

PRICE: Around $900.

PERFECT FOR: Large teams of commercial or industrial personnel.

Rugged recommendation

The landscape of the rugged smartphone market has changed considerably since our previous most durable Android phone list.

Thanks to the rollout of 5G connectivity and increased consumer focus on durability and repair servicing, we have more choices now than ever.

Based on our revised scoring, we can confidently recommend two of the highest-performing rugged Android phones available to you.

First, the Kyocera DuraForce Ultra. It achieved the highest BIFL score on the list at 90%, winning points for ruggedness, multipurposeness, and importantly, repairability. Kyocera has undoubtedly the best after-sales care of all phones on the list, no doubt due to their focus on business customers. If this is you, there’s really no better option for your team.

If you’re shopping around just for yourself, however, allow us to turn your attention to the AGM Glory PRO. It’s $100 cheaper than the Kyocera, and actually has more claim to the ‘most durable smartphone’ throne, thanks to its MIL-STD-810H certification. You’ll also enjoy fast 5G connection, 8GB RAM, a well-developed camera system, all the smartphone conveniences you’d expect from an iPhone, and a couple of other neat features including a thermal imaging camera, a laser range finder, and an ear-piercing 3.5W “outdoors” speaker.

Doogee S95 Pro

Doogee S95 Pro | Image Credit Amazon Com

Modular phones were the talk of the town [2] a few years back, with many touting the potential of a device that could be continually upgraded without the disposal of the core handset.

The talk mostly fizzled out, but remnants of modular smartphone design remain, and the Doogee S95 Pro exists as a testament to that idea.

Chinese-born smartphone company Doogee doesn’t make flimsy phones. Their whole product range is dedicated to the idea of phones that are built to last, and the S95 Pro is the star of their line-up.

The durability features on this handset include the following:

#BIFL
  • Military rated MIL-STD-810G specification for shock-resistance
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • IP69K rating (highest recognized rating) for high-temperature water jet resistance
  • Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4 damage-resistant screen
  • Off-road Tyre Rubber bumper material.

Combined, these features enable 360-degrees of high-level protection from any typical hazard that a phone may face.

For all its durability features, the dual-SIM S95 isn’t short on core specs either.

It features a Helio P90 Octa-core processor with 8GB of RAM and 128GB ROM, and triple Sony 48MP & 16MP cameras.

The battery is 5150mAh, already superior to that of the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s capacity of 3969mAh – but there’s more.

The S95 boasts a modular back panel that enables ‘tap-on’ attachment of two devices. One is a wireless charging battery pack module that adds 3500mAh of extra power for a total of 8650mAh, and the other, a 6W HiFi speaker module with an independent battery

It runs on Android 9 for a super responsive ad and bloatware-free UX, and has all the handy high-tech integrations you could expect such as NFC payment and a fingerprint sensor.

At its price point, it’s one of the highest specced but most affordable rugged android phones out there.

PRICE: Around $370.

PERFECT FOR: Battery-intensive phone users who will put their handset through its paces.

Ulefone Armor 9

Ulefone Armor 9 | Image Credit Amazon Com

A worthy rival to the CAT S62 Pro at a lower price point, Ulefone’s latest flagship model, the Armor 9, balances wide-ranging functionality with serious toughness:

#BIFL
  • Military rated MIL-STD-810G specification for shock, low-pressure, humidity, acidity, and solar-radiation resistance.
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • IP69K rating for high-temperature water jet resistance
  • Soft TPU and aluminum alloy reinforced polycarbonate material
  • High-density macro-molecule coating for waterproofing

Quite impressive dedication to overall durability, and unique two-point waterproofing.

The phone also has a number of industrial add-ons, such as the FLIR thermal camera, and uniquely a purchasable ‘endoscope’ attachment that can flexibly insert into impossible to reach areas and offer a live display on the phone’s screen, be it a pipe, engine, air conditioner, or anything else.

With both Face-ID and fingerprint unlock, NFC payments can be made very securely, and the dual 4G SIM card slots with quadruple-module navigation system ensure you will almost never be out of service or lost.

It’s no slouch under the hood either. With the Helio P90 Octa-core processor, it has 4.6x better performance than that of the BV9800 Pro.

It has 8GB of RAM and 128GB ROM, expandable up to 2TB (!) with an additional purchasable storage card.

The battery capacity is a very generous 6600mAh giving you up to two days of continuous use.

PRICE: Around $550.

PERFECT FOR: Budget but still highly specced version of the CAT S62 Pro.

If you appreciate the toughness of the S62 Pro or the Armor 9, but the price point and bulky dimensions put you off, CAT has got you covered.

The S52 offers nearly identical levels of protection as the S62 Pro, with a few ancillary features such as the thermal camera stripped off, for a few hundred dollars less.

It’s billed as ‘the world’s thinnest truly rugged phone’, and at 9.69mm, they might be right. Rugged features include:

#BIFL
  • Military rated MIL-STD-810G specification for shock-resistance
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • Corning® Gorilla® Glass 6 damage-resistant screen
  • Non-slip rubberised TPU back

Minus compliance with the most recent military specification (810H), the S52 protects nearly as well as the S62 Pro in a slimmer, more attractive profile.

There is a small step down in internals for this model though, which features Mediatek Helio P35 Octa-core processors, a 3100mAh battery, and a still-respectable 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM.

It runs on Android 9 and will be compatible with the upcoming Android 10 OS.

The S52 features the same construction-friendly considerations as all other CAT phones such as wet/gloved finger operation and its ability to be washed. And unlike the other brands in the list, this model’s warranty extends to two years, which should give you some confidence in their rugged claims.

So, if ruggedness and price are your biggest considerations, the S52 is a worthy choice.

PRICE: Around $400.

PERFECT FOR: Pocket-friendly premium protection at a reasonable price.

As if we weren’t already convinced enough, Blackview’s website asks the question, ‘Why go Rugged?’ , and gives some pretty persuasive answers. They too believe the life cycle of the leading smartphones is ludicrously short, and that phones should be designed to easily survive typical usage, and even industrial and outdoor environments.

The BV9800 Pro lives up to this promise.

It is dual-SIM enabled for sturdy network connection anywhere and has a FLIR thermal imaging camera that can measure and display heat sources up to 400°C for industrial diagnostic and control purposes. A ‘cool’ feature, and it pairs well with the following tough-stuff:

#BIFL
  • Military rated MIL-STD-810G specification for shock-resistance
  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • IP69K rating for high-temperature water jet resistance
  • Thermal-resistance between -30°C and +50°C

That means the BV9800 can survive 30 mins underwater at 1.5m, and a drop of 1.5m, and continue working as if nothing ever happened.

Plus, each purchase of any Blackview phone grants you to one year of their VoicePing software, which turns the phone, and any other enabled phones near it, into fully functional walkie-talkies. Perfect for the construction site.

Coming in slightly less powerful than the S95 Pro, the BV9800 Pro has Helio P70 Octa-core processors, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB ROM.

It uses the basic Android 9 OS which will be familiar to previous users.

The battery however is superior to that of the S95 at 6580mAh, which one Amazon review said is enough to easily last for 3 straight days of intensive usage.

The Sony 48MP rear camera impresses, especially in its unique Nightshot mode, and the additional GLONASS & BEIDOU navigation system modules will ensure you never get lost.

NFC pay enabled and with two unlocking types; fingerprint sensor and face recognition, this is a phone that is as suited to outdoor adventures as it is in the office.

PRICE: Over $600

PERFECT FOR: Less processor-intensive industrial and outdoorsy applications.
